best time to do the Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) Trek is from July to September. This is when the route is fully accessible, weather conditions are relatively stable, and the lakes are at their most stunning.
July.
The snow starts melting, revealing lush green meadows and fresh alpine flowers. The lakes are partially surrounded by snow, creating dramatic views. It’s a great month if you want a mix of snow and greenery.
August (Best Month):
August is considered the ideal time for the KGL trek. The weather is pleasant, the meadows are in full bloom, and all the lakes—Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangbal—appear crystal clear. Trek conditions are generally the most stable during this period.
September:
September offers fewer crowds and clear skies. The landscape turns slightly golden as autumn approaches, and the lakes remain beautiful. Nights can get colder, but the views are peaceful and rewarding.
Outside these months, heavy snow (June) and harsh weather (October onwards) make the trek unsafe. For the best overall experience, mid-July to late August is the perfect window to do the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.
